Located just under an hour’s drive from the town of Jasper, Maligne Lake is a must see before summer’s end! Situated in Canada’s Jasper National Park, Maligne Lake boasts spectacular glacier-fed water that changes hues of brilliant blues and turquoise as you move along the 22.5km long lake. Here are a few activities you can look forward to during your day on the beautiful lake.

A note on travel during COVID-19: There are health & safety measures that are currently in place—make sure to follow them! We’ve noted them below.

Cruise to Spirit island

You simply cannot go to Maligne Lake without experiencing the world-famous Canadian icon that is Spirit Island. Arguably one of the most picturesque places in the Canadian Rockies, this world-renowned island is surrounded by jaw-dropping mountains while on the beautiful turquoise lake.

The Maligne Lake Cruise is a 90 minute interpretive journey on the majestic glacier-fed lake which docks just next to Spirit Island, where you can view the small island in all its glory. While on board, don’t forget to go on deck to enjoy the sun and breeze before reaching your long awaited destination.

When travelling during the pandemic, note that seats are assigned so you must purchase your ticket in advance and arrive early for check-in. You will also need to wear a mask for the duration of the cruise, but you can remove it once you reach Spirit Island. Be sure to maintain at least 2m distance from other travellers once on land.

Canoeing on the lake

If you can’t get enough of the water (which we’re sure you won’t!), boat rentals are available, allowing you to canoe, kayak, rowboat, or even paddle around the lake. Treat yourself to stunning, panoramic views, distanced from civilization and surrounded by lush forests and majestic mountains.

If you’re up for the challenge, no motorized boat is prohibited beyond Spirit Island, so the lake is all yours to explore. It will take several hours from the boat house, approximately 5 hours just to get to Spirit Island.

If you do decide to experience the waters yourself, please stay safe, the risk of hypothermia is real. Please wear a life jacket and be mindful of the boats crossing.

Since you’ll be in the open air, masks are not required on your watercraft. You will be asked to sanitize your hands and sign a waiver before proceeding with your rental.

If you’d rather stay on land, there are plenty of trails to be explored around Maligne Lake that will result in breathtaking views. Several trail heads beginning on the lake including; Moose Lake Trail, Mary Schäffer Loop and Opal Hills Loop. The trails range from an easy 2.7km stroll to a more difficult 10.4km hikes, so make sure you are prepared for which one you want to conquer!

Make sure to stay on the paths and, where possible, maintain at least 2m distance from other groups.
